Assume no one is interested in your marketing. What to do instead?
Let's flip how we've always done marketing! Let's reverse marketing! It's a way of thinking about your business as a value adder instead of a profit taker.
Let's flip how we've always done marketing!
I've always been of the school of thought that starting from the unknown to the known gives clarity. So, we will flip some concepts on its head today and create our marketing from the unknown.
And this is not a way of saying we've been doing marketing wrong. Neither is this a phenomenon concept. As humans, we desire more. And we're going to make a tiny assumption and deduction, that is - no one is interested in what we are selling.
It’s easier to love a brand when the brand loves you back - Seth Godin
What? if no one is interested in what I'm selling, how then can I sell them? Wait and hear me out. Let's reverse marketing as we know it.
Few things start happening to you when you employ this marketing strategy.
You realize that your customer is your biggest asset. And not your product or what you're selling. Suddenly you're more aware of the fact that if people don't buy from you, your business dies.
You are forced to talk to the customers to understand what they want. Not just in terms of tools but the problem they want to solve. Jobs to be done.
The way your product is positioned will change. No longer as a tool or set of features but as a solution.
You have a better view of who your competitors are. You used to think about competition in linear terms. That stops today. MTN x Coke are competitors. 😎
You are laser-focused on who your customers are, where your market is and how to set up as the proverbial purple cow. (remember Seth Godin's purple cow???!)
Before you start your next marketing - offline or online. Start here 👇🏽
Assume that no one knows your product
And even if some know, assume no one is interested
Then ask yourself the "5 why's" no one is interested
Stretch it further with the 5 why's again and ask what problem they have and how you can help them solve it
Out of the solutions to the problem, which one of them can you implement that will bring great value to them
Whatever it is, do it
Looking at the points above, you see we never mentioned anything like marketing, copywriting or anything. Because starting from there makes a manipulator. And that's what most of the ads you see do - they try to manipulate us by shoving stuff on our faces until we are tired of seeing them and either get frustrated and leave or just click.
Less empathy. Or no empathy.
The whole idea is that by the time we are done with the marketing campaign or program, the right customer and customer size would have to know our products. And they'll be willing to spread it for us.
You can see that instead of focusing on getting what you want from someone else, try focusing on helping them get what they want.
Let me know when you try this.
