Finding Your First 100 Super Fans
You've got the skills, you've got the content, and you've got the audience. Now it's time to get your first 100 super fans. And we're here to help!
Let's talk growth.
For creators, web3 offers fresh and dynamic ways to connect and engage with your audiences or (true) fans.
In the introduction to web3 for creators, I mentioned the 1000 true fans idea. Fans paying for your creations.
Before 1000, how do you acquire the first 100 true fans?
The secret to success in web3 as a creator is simple: acquire your first 100 super fans.
"I believe that creators need to amass only 100 True Fans—not 1,000—paying them $1,000 a year, not $100. Today, creators can effectively make more money off fewer fans." - Li Jin of a16z
The idea is to have 100 true fans who can pay you in multiples of what you can get from 1000 true fans.
Nurture Your Tribe.
To get your first 100 true fans, recognize your tribe. The people who will spread your content without being paid to do so are your tribe. They share it on social media, tell their friends about it and generally make sure that everyone knows about your work, even if they don't want to pay for it themselves.
Once you recognize your tribe, section your audiences and offer tailored products and services at varying price points.
It's hard.
Acquiring your first 100 true fans is hard work. Do not start out by focusing on the 100 but on creating a tribe.
Your tribe are the people that will share and engage your works on every social platform. Your plan is to migrate people from tribe to true fans.
Once people start following your work regularly, a percentage of them are likely to support you financially because they know what they're getting into with each piece of your work.
Let's acquire your first 100 true fans.
Here are some tips to help you acquire your first 100 super fans:
Create and distribute your work freely on social platforms - Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Whatsapp etc.
Nurture your tribe and start capturing value from them using an email list.
Convert some of those fans to super fans.
Leverage some of those buyers to higher-value purchases, such as exclusive content, exclusive access, or direct interaction with the creator.
Let's start.
Build a community. Community is fun because quality content makes it so. Ensure your content is high quality and engaging. Make people excited about what you create and easy to share — not just because it's free!
Distribution before creation. Know how you'll distribute before you start content creation. Most creators I've had a conversation with follow - create it, and they'll come. No, they won't. Figure out distribution first. In web3, distribution is easy - engage your community. Take a lesson from this guy.
Be Intentional. Do not dabble in sharing your content without the desired call to action. Be deliberate. Do you want to make money from this? Want people to share or view it? Do you want them to contribute or participate in any way? Knowing what your goal is will help guide the way.
Your superfans don't just buy your products or services—they actually become invested in your success and future projects. And are usually your biggest cheerleaders.
